Service

Being of Service in Narcotics Anonymous

Our literature says that our primary purpose in Narcotics Anonymous is to "carry the message to the addict who still suffers." We do this by being of service.  Service comes in many forms and can be undertaken by anyone. The majority of tasks in NA are completed by individual members who volunteer their time.

"We only keep what we have by giving it away." Our greatest tool for carrying out our primary purpose is the NA group, and without individuals doing service, the NA group would not survive. "Our survival is directly related to the survival of the group and the Fellowship." Service is also an integral part of personal recovery in NA and allows us to receive the full benefits that this program has to offer. Ultimately, being of service in NA is one way many of our members choose to demonstrate their gratitude for all that NA has given to them.

Service Meetings

Northwestern Ontario Area Service Committee

The Area Service Committee serves the groups in the Northwestern Ontario Area. The Area provides services for the groups that would be difficult for the groups to provide without taking away from the time and resources they need to focus on carrying the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers. The Area also has several subcommittees that have specific tasks. If you would like to help with any of these, we suggest you attend the subcommittee's meeting. You can also attend the Area Service Committee meeting. Any addict may attend the Area meeting or any of the subcommittee meetings.

Mentorship Service pool

We are much more productive when we build structures in which responsibilities are outlined, roles are clear, and simple checks are in place as a part of the process. Mentoring, supporting, and encouraging members in their efforts to serve can simply make it easier to do the next right thing. Accountability is a two-way street. When our relationship to our services lacks trust, service is unattractive.

Guiding Principles Tradition 9. pg 58-59

The Mentorship Program involves connecting members who are new to their service position to more experienced members with service experience in that area.
